Sometimes You Don't Need a Big Trip
Not every photography adventure needs a passport, a week off work, or months of planning.
Mini Photo Adventures are focused photography experiences built around a single place and a single day. I pick somewhere I want to photograph, figure out when the light and conditions should be right, and open a handful of spots for photographers who want to come along.
Some might be close to home. Others might require a road trip, a flight, or a night in a hotel.
How you get there is up to you. We meet there and go photograph.
I'll plan the photography. You plan the journey.
Drive in that morning. Make a weekend out of it. Bring your partner and stay a few extra days. That's completely up to you.
Each Mini Photo Adventure has a designated meeting place and time. Once we're together, we'll spend the experience exploring and photographing the locations I've planned.

Shoot With Me
This isn't a photography class with everyone standing around while I lecture. I'll be photographing too. Ask questions, watch how I approach a scene, show me what you're working on, or just find your own composition and shoot.
The Location Is the Workshop
I do the scouting and planning ahead of time. We'll be where I think we have the best photographic opportunities at the right times instead of spending the day figuring out where to go.
Small Groups
Usually limited to just 6 photographers, keeping the experience personal and giving everyone plenty of room to explore, shoot, and get help when they want it.
All Experience Levels
You don't need to be an expert. You should know the basics of operating your camera, but I'll help when you need it.
What's Included
Included: The planned photography experience, location scouting, photographic guidance, and any photography permits required for the adventure.
Not included: Transportation to/from the meeting location, lodging, meals, park entrance fees unless specifically stated, and personal photography equipment.

Mini Photo Adventures are for photographers who would rather be outside making photographs than sitting in a classroom.
You might be an experienced landscape photographer looking for somewhere new to shoot. You might be learning and want to spend a day alongside other photographers. Or maybe you simply like going interesting places with a camera in your hand.
You don't need to photograph like me. You just need to want to go.

New Mini Photo Adventures will be announced throughout the year. Each one will have its own location, schedule, difficulty level, photographic opportunities and gear recommendations.
Because conditions matter, some adventures may also be built around seasons, celestial events, wildlife or other opportunities that only happen at particular times.

Paint Mines Interpretive Park, Colorado

Color, Texture & An Unexpected Colorado Landscape
There are places that don't look anything like you expect. Paint Mines is one of them.
Layers of pink, orange, yellow and white clay rise into sculpted hoodoos and formations across the prairie. We'll spend the afternoon exploring the landscape, looking for both larger compositions and the smaller patterns, textures and colors hidden throughout it.
The Adventure
We'll meet at Paint Mines in the afternoon and photograph through the changing late-day light.
Rather than rushing from viewpoint to viewpoint, we'll have time to explore compositions, experiment and watch how the landscape changes as the sun gets lower. I'll be shooting alongside you, helping with composition, technique or camera settings whenever you want it.
We'll finish around sunset.
Photography
This is a great location for both traditional landscape photography and more abstract work. We'll look for layers, repeating patterns, hoodoo formations, compressed landscapes and intimate details.
I'd bring a wide-to-normal zoom and a telephoto. Something covering roughly 24–200mm would give you plenty of options. A tripod is useful as the light gets lower.

Photograph One of Colorado's Great Wildlife Spectacles
Late fall brings the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep rut, when normally dispersed animals gather and the behavior between rams becomes considerably more active.
We'll spend the day looking for and photographing bighorn sheep around the Georgetown area, concentrating not only on portraits but on behavior and animals within the mountain environment.
The Adventure
Wildlife doesn't follow an itinerary, so this Mini will be intentionally flexible.
We'll meet in the Georgetown area and spend our time locating and observing the sheep while moving between the best available photographic opportunities. I'll share how I approach wildlife photography, including positioning, backgrounds, shutter speed and anticipating behavior.
The goal isn't simply to come home with a photograph of a sheep. It's to create photographs that say something about the animal, the season and the place.
Photography
A telephoto lens is essential for this adventure. I'd recommend at least 400mm of reach, with something in the 500–600mm range being ideal.
We'll work on portraits, environmental wildlife photographs, interactions between animals and, if we're fortunate, rut behavior between rams.

A Winter Hike With a Camera
Gem Lake is beautiful in any season, but winter strips the landscape down to its essentials: granite, snow, ice, trees and light.
We'll hike into Gem Lake together, photographing along the trail before spending time exploring compositions around the frozen lake and surrounding rock formations.
The Adventure
This one is as much about the journey as the destination.
We'll start in the morning and hike toward Gem Lake at a photography pace. That means stopping when the light or landscape gives us a reason to stop rather than treating the trail simply as a way to reach the lake.
Once there, we'll explore the frozen landscape before making our way back down.
Winter conditions can change quickly in Rocky Mountain National Park, so the exact schedule may adjust based on snow, weather and trail conditions.
Photography
We'll photograph winter mountain landscapes, snow-covered granite, ice, trees and smaller intimate compositions along the trail and around Gem Lake.
A 24–70mm plus 70–200mm would be an excellent combination, although there's no need to carry a huge amount of equipment. A lightweight tripod can be useful.
Microspikes or other traction devices required.

WINTER EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Participants should be comfortable hiking several miles in snow and cold conditions at elevation. Microspikes, appropriate winter footwear and warm layers are required. Final equipment recommendations and current trail conditions will be provided before the adventure.
